The Kargil war was over by the end of July and the Line of Control also mostly restored to its normal situation. In this scenario India did a mischief. India targeted an unarmed plane with its MIG fighters within the Pakistani airspace.

It was Atlantic plane of the Pakistan Navy  on a training flight. 16 Pakistanis martyred in this incident. It was a provocative step by India to restart a war that had come to and end. But Pakistan instead of creating war hysteria,

decided to move the International Court of Justice (the ICJ).

So Pakistan moved a petition against India to seek reparation for the loss it suffered. The ICJ rejected the Pakistan petition on the ground of jurisdiction The IJC wanted India and Pakistan decide their disputes through talks and peacefully.

After ICJ refused to hear the case, Naval Chief of Pakistan, Admiral Fasih Bokhari resigned. It was only 10 days after his resignation that the Nawaz Sharif government was also overthrown.

What happened during the period between return from Kargil and topple down of the government? I am Faisal Warriach and I will show you all this in the History of Pakistan series by 'Dekho, Suno, Jano'. On July 4,

PM Nawaz Sharif and US president Bill Clinton agreed on Pak troops' unconditional return from Kargil.

It was the agreement that was also going to determine future of Nawaz Sharif and that of Pakistan. This decision of ceasefire was greatly disliked by the people of Pakistan. The Opposition began protest demonstrations across Pakistan.

Political, religious and jihadi forces all come out on the road against Nawaz Sharif. Jamaat-e-Islami (the JI) announced to observe 'black day' o this agreement. While MQM Founder, Altaf Hussain termed the agreement a betrayal with the country.

Nawabzada Nasrullah Khan asked the people to keep up the momentum of protest against the government. Imran Khan, a rising politician, appealed the Army Chief not to let the rulers interfere into the defence matters.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman sensed the state sovereignty at a high risk after return from Kargil. The JI began to invite Martial Law before return from Kargil was formally announced. The Mujahideen, stated to be actually fighting in Kargil,

rejected the truce and announced to move to Sri Nagar. Commander Hizbul Mujahideen, Salladuddin, announced to continue fight in a different mode.

Time was passing and opposition against Nawaz Sharif was growing from political forces on all sides. Benazir Bhutto sitting outside the country at that time, strongly opposed the return from Kargil.

She supported the war and asked the PPP workers to get ready to fight shoulder to shoulder with the army. The PPP also released the schedule for protest movement against the rulers over return from Kargil.

The Opposition was so offended with the return from Kargril that it termed it Nawaz Sharif's help to India. It charged Nawaz Sharif with planning the Kargil debacle to help Indian PM Vajpaee win the polls.

The Opposition also incited the army to come into action and the traders to go on shutter-down strike.

Now "go-Nawaz-go" protest was in full swing and the situation was visibly against the Prime Minister. But Pakistan's friends and allies in the world were supporting withdrawal of the troops from Kargil.

Saudi Arabia openly backed Nawaz Sharif's announcement of return from Kargil. Karman Khan in a report said, the US and China had made efforts to convince the PM on return from Kargil. There was an impression that Nawaz Sharif had the US,

Saudi Arabia and China's support on return from Kargil. Nawaz Sharif had visited these countries before and after withdrawal of forces from Kargil. And these states not only supported the withdrawal but also peaceful resolution of Kashmir dispute.

But their support was meaningless since the problem was inside Pakistan where people were on protest. The political leadership was paying the price for the decision to return from Kargil. It was also not the case that planners of the Kargil war were sitting calm and quiet.

Not only these four generals but the officers also were facing immense reaction from the Jawans. The Jawans who had been fighting hard facing every hardship were putting questions on their officers.

General Musharraf and the 3 Generals who had kept the Kargil operation a secret, were in a troubled waters now. General Musharraf took an important decision in this situation. He began to visit the Military Courts. His visit had an interesting 'problem'.

What he wrote in his book and continuously denied that the Pak army troops were present on the Kargil peaks.... but they were Kashmiri Mujahid. But he could never claim it before the Jawans of the Pak Army. These jawans had rendered sacrifices facing very difficult situation miles inside the LoC for many days.

They had witnessed their colleagues laying down their lives in Kargil. That was why General Pervez Musharraf was relying on another logic to satisfy them. The logic was similar to what the religious and the Opposition parties had adopted in the street protest.

It was about dubbing the Kargil war and the withdrawal of the troops as political decisions. Musharraf said he had held India by the neck in Kargil but the political decision of withdrawal came.

But Musharraf failed to sell this justification to the Jawans who had faced hardships of the Kargil war. Particularly during his visit to Quetta, Gen.

Musharraf had faced a very tough reaction. The soldiers wanted answer why they were sent to Kargil if retreat had to be the outcome of the PM's US visit.

Not only Gen. Musharraf but his other three colleague Generals also came across the same tough reaction. Gen. Javed Hassan,

who had led the Kargil operation from the front, faced a difficult situation in Noshehra. Here a captain asked Gen.

Javed Hassain, whether he had visualized reaction of the enemy to the Kargil war?

The answer was, 'no.' Gen.Musharraf and his colleagues were oblivion of a problem that was more serious than Jawans' questions.

That problem was return of the bodies of the Jawans who had been martyred inside the Line of Control (LoC).

But the political and the military leadership had been stuck up in an inexplicable situation for hiding the truth. PM Nawaz Sharif and Gen.
