"He (Ghulam Ahmad) was taken to Pervez Musharraf as the people say and he was made to take oath in a way...

that you will stand with me and not Ziauddin who is very rigid about democracy." Such a source also conveyed Gen. Musharraf information about Gen.

Ziaduddin Butt's US visit. What was that US visit and what happened therein?

In September 1999, Nawaz Sharif in his stead sent Shehbaz Sharif to America.

In this important visit, the US was due to talk capture of Osama and signature on CTBT with Pakistan. Pakistan needed American help in resolving Kashmir issue.

But the visit was dominated by talks on the arrest or killing of Osama and the US help...

against the possible martial law in Pakistan. America was so impassioned to capture Osama that it also took Russia to its fold to achieve the goal. In this emotional spate,

the US was even ready to accept any demand of Pakistan. May be for his reason, the US officially opposed any possible unconstitutional step in Pakistan.

Although, the US statement was an extraordinary favour to Nawaz Sharif but the Opposition took it to its benefit.

The Opposition used it to show weakness of the Government and its efforts for survival with the US help.

Around this time, the DG ISI was in America talking in length about access to Osama-bin Laden. The US statement and Gen. Butt's visit alarmed Gen.

Musharraf and his colleagues. Gen. Musharraf thought that Nawaz Sharif was seeking American help to remove him from the office. Apprehending his removed, Gen.

Musharraf called a meeting of the senior officers of the Army. The meeting found out the way in case the PM would try to remove Gen. Musharraf as Army Chief.

The meeting also decided action in case the PM called the Army Chief and his return would delay. More than normal One Unit of the army was deployed outside the Prime Minister (PM) House.

For reacting promptly in an emergency situation, more commandos were stationed in Rawalpindi. Sophisticated equipment were installed in the PM House to monitor every conversation and tap calls. Gen.

Musharraf was kept informed with moment to moment discussion at the PM House. In a vital move, Gen. Musharraf entrusted the command of 111-Brigade,

to his highly confidant Brig. Sallahuddin Satti. Now the noose had been fully tightened around Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. It was the last day of September 1999. October 12, 1999 was only 12 days away. On the other hand Intelligence Bureau (IB) also kept the Prime Minister informed of what was going in the Army.

The IB also gave Nawaz Sharif recording of Gen. Musharraf's highly insulting remarks against the PM. This all showed that both sides were equally hostile to each other. Both were tapping the phone calls of each other.

But in media they were showing their excellent relations... and cohesion. They both were reciprocating each other to dispel the impression of mutual differences. In this situation two persons tried to normalize relations between the Prime Minister and the Army Chief. They were Shehbaz Sharif and Ch Nisar Ali Khan.

Through shuttle diplomacy they persuaded Nawaz Sharif to accept two demands of Pervez Musharraf. Musharraf wanted retirement of Corps Commander Quetta Gen. Tariq Pervez as he criticized the Kargil war. According to Gen. Abdul Majid Malik,

Musharraf suspected Gen. Tariq of communicating to the the PM... the decisions taken at the Corps Commanders' meeting. Secondly Gen.

Musharraf wanted that rumours of his removal from the office should be countered. Nawaz Sharif accepted both these conditions. He ordered retirement of Corps Commander Quetta Lt-Gen. Tariq Pervez. Gen.

Musharraf was also made Chairman Chiefs of Staff Committee to end remours about his removal. Gen. Musharraf was about to leave for Sri Lanka, when Admiral Fasih Bokhari resigned as Naval Chief. Later in an interview Bokhari said,

he resigned as he had learned about the plan of Musharraf's coup... and he did not want to become a part of his this 'dirty game'. But Bokhari's resignation then was given the reason of Atlantic's shoot-down and additional post of Musharraf.

Then some channels had also endorsed this point of view. After Adm. Fasih Bokhari had resigned, the PM hosted a farewell lunch in his honour. Gen. Musharraf also attended the lunch. Everyone enjoyed the lunch and left. Gen.

Musharraf was due to leave for Sri Lanka so too left. Everything appeared to have been settled down and the military and the civil relations returned to normal. But what happened in next 4 days that everything went upside down and Pakistan again drifted to martial law.

The books, interviews or articles by the persons who made the history clear the dust on these events. What we see with our naked eye does not necessarily lead to the truth and the reality. So the series will last till the year 2013 at this stage
